The Port of Motril leads port growth in Spain with an 18.6% increase at the close of last year, outpacing the 28 Spanish port authorities. Following closely behind are Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 10.2%, and Tarragona, with 10.1%.
In absolute terms, the Motril port has achieved its highest volume of goods in recent years in the 2023 balance. Significant increases have been recorded in general cargo, making it the port with the highest percentage growth and the fourth in absolute terms, with an increase of almost 400,000 tons. Additionally, in Ro-Ro traffic (goods transported by trailer or truck), it is the port with the highest percentage growth and the second in absolute terms in Spain, with an increase of 432,000 tons.
Port Authority President José García Fuentes attributes this success largely to the optimal functioning of maritime connections with the African continent. He particularly highlights the maritime line operated by the shipping company Balearia with Tanger-Med, which in the past year transported 476,419 tons, consolidating itself as a valuable option in logistics development for companies and operators trading between Europe and Africa.
The consolidated close of 2023 is also due to the maintenance of liquid and solid bulk cargo, as well as project cargo, such as wind turbine blades. Every year, the Port of Motril exports over a thousand of these large-scale elements, taking advantage of its good road accessibility and connectivity with the main maritime routes of the Strait.
The year 2024 has started strongly for the Port of Motril, once again leading port traffic statistics in January with a record growth of 66%.
