Jazz en la Costa festival
Organized by the Almuñécar City Council and the Granada Provincial Council, Jazz en la Costa is a leading event in Southern Europe and a pioneer in combining culture and tourism. It is one of the most respected and internationally acclaimed jazz festivals and one of the few to hold the European Union’s quality label. With a stage facing Africa and a historic setting beneath an Arab fortress and next to Phoenician ruins, the Festival benefits from the allure of its proximity to the Alboran Sea and the lush vegetation of the Costa Tropical.
The mild climate of Almuñécar allows the botanical garden of El Majuelo Park, the venue for the Jazz on the Coast concerts, to be home to 182 different species of plants representing numerous tropical regions of the planet: Central and South America, Africa, Madagascar, China, India, Arabia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia…
At the Phoenician fish-salting factory, one can observe the remains of rooms that resemble a labyrinth; vats in which the salted fish fillets were placed, transporting them in large amphorae for sale throughout the Mediterranean, especially in the cities of Carthage, Rome, and Corinth; as well as the remains of a possible large temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Attached to the south wall of the temple is a channel through which fresh water from the aqueduct arrived for washing the fish before salting.
In a privileged defensive position, above the auditorium designed by the master Urrengoechea, stands the Castle of San Miguel, shaped by the passage of the different peoples that have shaped the history of Almuñécar.
