Festival de Jazz en la Costa
38th Edition – Almuñécar International Festival: July 22–27, 2025
Organized by the Almuñécar Town Council and the Provincial Council of Granada. A benchmark from southern Europe and a pioneer in combining culture and tourism, Jazz en la Costa is one of the most respected and internationally awarded jazz events, and one of the few festivals to hold the European Union’s seal of quality. With a stage facing Africa and a historic heritage setting—beneath an Arab fortress and alongside Phoenician ruins—the festival enjoys the unique charm of its location near the Alboran Sea and the lush vegetation of the Tropical Coast.
Almuñécar’s mild climate allows for perfect coexistence in the botanical garden of El Majuelo Park, the venue for Jazz en la Costa concerts. The garden is home to 182 plant species from tropical regions around the world: Central and South America, Africa, Madagascar, China, India, Arabia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
At the nearby Phoenician fish salting factory, you can see the remains of rooms laid out like a labyrinth, and basins where salted fish fillets were placed before being packed into large amphorae for transportation and sale throughout the Mediterranean—particularly in Carthage, Rome, and Corinth. There are also remains of what may have been a large temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Attached to the temple’s south wall is a channel that brought freshwater from the aqueduct to wash the fish before salting.
Overlooking the concert venue, in a privileged defensive position above the amphitheater designed by maestro Urrengoechea, stands San Miguel Castle, shaped by the many peoples who have contributed to the history of Almuñécar.
