A Brief History of Córdoba

Córdoba has been shaped by Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, Jews and Christians over more than two millennia. Its golden age came during the Caliphate of Córdoba (10th century), when it was one of the most advanced and cosmopolitan cities in Europe—renowned for science, philosophy, poetry and architecture. Many of its monuments reflect this period of cultural brilliance, especially the Mezquita, one of the most remarkable buildings in the world.

Today, Córdoba preserves its medieval charm while blending modern Andalusian life: whitewashed courtyards, artisan workshops, elegant squares and narrow lanes that tell the story of its rich past.
