Discover the Thermal Baths of La Malahá: A Journey Through History and Wellness

The Thermal Baths of La Malahá, located just a few kilometers from Granada, offer a perfect blend of wellness, leisure, and a glimpse into the history of this thermal enclave. This modern thermal complex, which preserves historical vestiges, is an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy a day of relaxation in its mineral-rich waters.

History of the Thermal Baths

Thermal Baths of La Malahá

The use of La Malahá’s thermal waters dates back to the Carthaginian era. Later, the Romans took advantage of their medicinal properties, and during the Nasrid period, they became a significant social gathering point, thanks to the curative properties of the waters, known then as the “spring of the waters of beauty.”

In the 19th century, they gained popularity as a spa, drawing visitors seeking treatments for rheumatic, skin, and respiratory conditions. Among the illustrious figures who visited, it is worth highlighting the composer Manuel de Falla, who arranged for his sister to stay at the baths in the 1920s, and Isabel García Lorca, sister of the renowned poet Federico García Lorca, who recounted her family’s visit in her book Recuerdos míos, praising the beauty of the surroundings and the quality of the waters.

The original spa ceased operations in 1942 and was demolished in 1987.
Today, historical remains such as a Roman pool, an Arab cistern, and the vault of the old Hammam have been integrated into the modern complex.

Modern Facilities

Thermal Baths of La Malahá

The Thermal Baths of La Malahá complex includes three thermal pools and two modern cold-water pools (one for adults and one for children), surrounded by gardens and equipped with all the amenities needed for an enjoyable day. The thermal pools’ waters, which emerge at a constant temperature of 29 °C, are classified as calcium sulfate waters with chlorinated bicarbonate characteristics. Their unique green-oxide hue and soft, silky texture reflect their rich mineral composition. These features provide therapeutic benefits ideal for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis, or acne, as well as rheumatic, muscular, and joint problems. The waters also promote toxin elimination, revitalize skin, hair, and nails, and offer antioxidant benefits.

The facilities also include changing rooms and a restaurant, ensuring visitors a complete and comfortable experience.
