Historical Treasures
Jete boasts a rich history. While there is evidence of human settlements in the area since the Neolithic period, with burials in caves and cists and a rich presence of lithic and ceramic industries, the documented origin of the current settlement can be traced back to the Arab period. The village’s architecture, characterized by narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowerpots, reflects its Moorish heritage.
The most significant buildings include the Parish Church of San Antonio, built between the 16th and 17th centuries and home to works by the Granada sculptor Alonso de Mena; and the Hermitage of the Virgin of Bodíjar, named after the patron saint of the town.
This chapel is located four kilometers from the center of the town of Jete, atop the Bodíjar ravine, and offers an incredible panoramic view of the Verde River valley and the Mediterranean Sea. Two other viewpoints, the Acebuches Viewpoint and the Algarrobos Viewpoint, also offer excellent views of the surroundings.
